I often stretch my own canvasses. Here on the back you can see the raw canvas. I coat the front sides my canvasses with three layers of gesso (pronounced jesso) to protect the cloth from acids within the paints. These days I often leave the sides of the canvas bare- without gesso-to give it a soft cloth feel.
